Regular vacuuming, performed with the proper equipment, is essential
to keeping your carpet looking its best.
It's important to consider your carpet's construction and color, as
well as your lifestyle, in setting a regular vacuuming schedule. Light,
bright and solid carpet colors show soil more readily, and smooth pile
finishes show changes in pile direction more easily than textured
styles. If carpet is placed in a high traffic hallway, it will require
more frequent vacuuming than those placed in other rooms.
Carpet manufacturers recommend that you vacuum your carpet
thoroughly at least once a week. Family rooms and hallways will
benefit from a light daily vacuuming.
Choose a vacuum that can handle the job. An upright model, with
strong suction and a built-in beater bar, does the best job in lifting
ground-in dirt. Be sure to adjust the height of the brush to your
carpet, and clean the brush regularly.
When vacuuming, move the machine slowly, with strokes following in
one direction, for a uniform appearance. Light vacuuming consists of
at least three strokes in a forward-back-forward motion over a given
area, while a more thorough cleaning calls for seven or more passes in
each area.
Heating and ventilating systems should be designed to maintain an interior relative humidity (in the air) between 35% and 50% RH all year round, to ensure the best performance of hardwood flooring.
